Is it some sort of archaic culture of early moderating on this site? If I recall correctly the original image thread had some people that were generally disgusted by it for some reason (which like, there are other, much more graphic uploads on here, this one isn't particularly of note in regards to this community). So maybe it was reported into oblivion, or perhaps a mod at the time saw the complaints and was like 'aight'. Just a theory.

Well, I tried to upload the full-sized version (1024x877 on this rendition vs 3988x3413 on the DeviantArt full-sized version) and it told me the pic was "banned, reason:" [no reason given]
