I think the voting system might be just a new feature to pave the way for filters yet to come.
perhaps like you say, some option could be arising to allow users to browse images in order of highest scores etc?

Either that or for the sake of artists interested in feedback, a simple nod or shake of approval/disapproval can do a load of good :)
