His customs line moved at a snail’s pace, but eventually Wade was able to pick up his luggage and leave the confines of the airport. He was officially in Norway, and he smiled. He always wanted to visit his family’s fatherland, the place where his lineage began. Wade boarded the shuttle taking him to his hotel in Hommelvik, about halfway across the country from Oslo. This little hamlet was located east of Trondheim, nestled on the banks of the Trondheim River. Wade couldn’t wait to arrive. The bus stopped and gave a quick honk of the horn, since most of the passengers aboard her slept during their trek northward. Wade was no exception. He had wanted to take in the natural sights Norway had to offer, but jet lag took over quickly. He never prepared himself for the time change, and it finally caught up with him. He wiped out the sleep from his eyes and stood up, gathering his luggage and stepped off the bus. Wade checked into his hotel and got himself settled. His tiny guestroom made him look like a giant against the single bed, and since the little dresser wouldn’t hold all of his belongings, he set his suitcase on top of it and considered himself unpacked. He grabbed local fare at a little restaurant not far from the hotel, and noticed a brochure of Hommelvik and its attractions. He picked one off the stand and found the English language on it. Reading the brochure, it talked about a quaint hiking trail that took a scenic route alongside the Trondheim River. He paid his bill and set off to find the trail. After asking two different local residents for directions, Wade finally found the archway in the park that started the trail. Wade checked his watch and allowed him two hours out and two hours return. That ought to bring him back by dinner time, he thought. The trail was just as scenic as the brochure indicated. Since Wade arrived in Norway during their summer months, the temperature was surprisingly warm. He took off his sweatshirt and tied it around his waist, using the sleeves. Now his chest was only clad in a white and red tank top, which suited him fine. With an hour’s walk outside the village, Wade was by himself and stepped off the trail to explore a rocky cliff overlooking the river. Only the soft sounds of babbling water, birds chirping in the branches, and his feet crunching over fallen twigs could be heard. He was completely alone. He stood on the beige rock and peered down, marveling at nature’s artwork. That’s when he heard the thumping of something very large behind him. Startled, Wade quickly turned around and saw a massive foot buried halfway in the ground, with the feminine toenails painted white. She made no move against him, probably figuring her height was enough to scare him half to death as it is. She just kept smiling at him and slowly squatted down toward him.
